Performance - What's NEW on the 2012 Impreza
New Engine: Better Performance
You would not buy a house based just on curbside appeal, would you? The 2012 Impreza is more than just a pretty face. A new vehicle is the second most expensive purchase that most Americans make, and you want the most for your money. The 2012 Subaru Impreza trades in the 2.5-liter engine for a more practical 2.0-liter DOHC FB20 engine. However, the smaller engine size does not sacrifice speed or handling.
Fuel Efficiency
With gas prices soaring every year we all want to save money at the pump. The new 148-HP 2.0-liter Boxer engine delivers an astounding 36 MPG out of the box with an automatic transmission. Coupled with a continuous variable transmission (CVT), the standard AWD Impreza manages to squeeze an additional 10 MPG (a 30% increase) over its predecessor. Say goodbye to the gas station. The 2012 Impreza goes an astounding 520 miles between fill ups.
Subaru Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT
Subaru first introduced its Lineartronic CVT in the 2010 Legacy and Outback models, and now the 2012 Impreza debuts a lighter, quieter and more compact version that delivers both enhanced driving performance and environmental friendliness. Unlike a conventional Automatic transmission, which uses fixed gear ratios, a CVT provides infinite variability between the highest and lowest available ratios with no discernible steps or shifts. The CVT continuously and smoothly adapts to performance demand, helping to keep the engine in its most efficient operating range. Compared to CVT's used in other brands, the Impreza CVT provides wider ratio coverage, due to a larger difference between the largest and small pulley diameters.Subaru refined the CVT in the 2012 Impreza to deliver smooth, linear acceleration, closer to a conventional automatic transmission while still delivering the efficiency benefits of a CVT. Low speed acceleration in particular feels even stronger than a comparison of performance figures alone might suggest. The engine now also supports standing-starts in the pre-selected "second gear" ratio to reduce the likelihood of wheel spin on slippery surfaces.

Fuel Economy & Speed
When you think of a smaller engine, you picture greater fuel economy, but reduced power. While the 2012 Impreza set a record for greatest fuel economy in an AWD vehicle, it does not sacrifice power. The 2012 Subaru Impreza actually gets better gas mileage than many more expensive 2WD competitors. The new CVT transmission and engine boasts a 0 to 60 time in 9.8 seconds, an astounding 0.3 second improvement over the larger, 170-hp Boxer engine in earlier Impreza models. How does a smaller engine equal a faster car? Subaru engineers cut 110 pounds from the Impreza, primarily from the smaller engine size, to 2,911 pounds. An optional trip computer also tells you exactly how well your car is performing with the following features:![]() | space | The multi-function trip computer is positioned at the top center of the instrument panel.
