Subaru Outback vs. Subaru Ascent

The new Subaru Ascent is here. With the release of this new SUV, you're probably now wondering: "Should I go for the Ascent, or a different Subaru model - perhaps the tried and true Subaru Outback?" Luckily for you, we're here to break down the differences between these two Subaru models. From power to capacity to technology, each has its strong suits.

Performance & Efficiency

The Subaru Outback features a standard 175-horsepwoer engine (though a 256-horsepower V6 is also available). The Subaru Ascent, by contrast, comes standard with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 260-horsepower. The Outback gets an EPA-estimated 25 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway, though. The Ascent, because of its larger size, gets an EPA-estimated 21 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway*

*EPA-estimated fuel economy. Actual mileage may vary.

The Subaru Outback provides 108.1 cubic feet of total interior passenger volume, while the Subaru Ascent offers up to 153.8 cubic feet of space. The Outback seats five while the Ascent seats 7 (when equipped with standard second row captain's chairs) or 8 (with a second-row bench seat). The Outback provides about 35 cubic feet of cargo space, while the Ascent provides up to 18 cubic feet behind the third row. Fold the second and third rows of seating down in an Ascent though, and you gain access to 72.6 cubic feet of cargo space, vs. the Subaru Outback's total available 73.3 cubic feet of space.

Ground Clearance and Drivetrain

Both the Subaru Ascent and the Subaru Outback offer standard Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive and 8.7 inches of ground clearance to help traverse tough terrain.

Safety and Technology

Both the Subaru Ascent and the Subaru Outback offer STARLINK™ infotainment as well as Subaru EYESIGHT® active safety technology. That being said, the Ascent is the only Subaru model of the two - and in fact the first Subaru model - to offer EYESIGHT® standard.
