Subaru and the Environment

THE SUBARU COMMITMENT TO THE ENVIRONMENT

WHY A NEW OR USED SUBARU IS THE RIGHT ENVIRONMENTAL CHOICE FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY

Subaru owners are independent people who have confidence and control to take on the world and have fun along the way. At Subaru of Keene, we understand that Subaru owners are concerned about the environmental impact of their vehicle, but still want a vehicle that has attractive styling and go-anywhere versatility. Learn how Subaru vehicles minimize their environmental impact without sacrificing styling, safety and power.

Subaru Manufacturing Environmental Impact

Vehicle Recycling

Disposing of vehicles can cause waste and damage the environment. Subaru has set up a recycling design project team to design future vehicles that allow for easy recycling. Subaru has improved recyclability by making vehicles easier to dismantle, using materials that are easy to recycle, easier material identification and the reduction of substances that endanger the environment.

Subaru of Indiana Automotive

Subaru of Indiana produces the Subaru Outback, Legacy and Tribeca. The plant is located on an 832-acre site that is home to deer, coyotes, beavers, bald eagles, and many other animals. Subaru of Indiana sends less to the landfill than the average American household does, which demonstrates our commitment to recycling. In fact, the Subaru of Indiana Plant has won the Urban Wheel Award in 2010 for Greenest Manufacturing Plant in America.

Subaru Environmental Commitment

Subaru's commitment to the environment goes beyond vehicle production and recycling. Subaru is partnered with Leave No Trace, Geological Society of America and the American Canoe Association.

Environmentally Friendly Subaru Vehicles

EPA Emission Standards

All Subaru vehicles meet the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Tier 2 Bin 5 standard, which measures the environmental impact of specific vehicles and the manufactures fleet of vehicles. The midsize Subaru Legacy with the naturally aspirated (non-turbo) 2.5-liter engine and continuously variable transmission (CVT) meets the EPA's Tier 2 Bin 4 standard. This commitment to the environment made the Legacy an EPA SmartWay national certified vehicle.

SmartWay Certification

SmartWay certification evaluates U.S. vehicles based on air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions and overall fuel economy. The 2011 PZEV-certified Subaru Legacy with the 2.5-liter naturally aspirated engine and continuously variable transmission (CVT) meets these requirements.

California Air Resources Board (CARB)

The California Air Resources Board standards for vehicle emissions are often tougher than those set by the EPA. All Subaru vehicles meet the CARB LEV II standard and are 50-state certified. The naturally aspirated 2.5-liter engine Subaru Forester, Legacy and Outback meet the strict Partial Zero Emission Vehicle (PZEV) standards. The 3.6-liter engine Legacy and Outback meet the ULEV2 standard.

Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (PZEV)

PZEV certified Subaru vehicles come equipped with advanced gasoline engines that produce ultra-clean emissions with zero evaporative emissions. CARB requires zero fuel evaporative emissions in order to qualify for PZEV. However, PZEV vehicles are sold in all 50-states with the same strict requirements. All Subaru vehicles with a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated engine meet the stringent Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle exhaust emission standard (SULEV). Subaru's environmental commitment to meeting PZEV standards is what makes a Subaru a Subaru.

Miles Per Gallon (MPG)

Subaru's all-wheel drive system not only gives you stable handling on the road, but also boasts excellent fuel economy. The Subaru vehicle lineup is rated as the most fuel effecient all-wheel drive vehicles in America, proving the Subaru commitment to the environment.

Clean Gasoline Exhaust

Vehicles emit carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), which are contribute to air pollution. Subaru's Low Emission vehicles significantly reduce emissions, which demonstrate our commitment to reducing air pollution and the environment.
